Coffee House Unplugged in Monson
The Monson Arts Council invites you to join us either as performer or audience for Coffee House Unplugged
on Friday, March 21st, 7-9 P.M. at the Monson Free Library, 2 High Street.
The evening will feature drama, song, and poetry as local artists share their talents.

Kate Rushin at Westfield State University
March 26, 7pm, Loughman Living Room, Scanlon Hall, WSU
Returning to Westfield State by popular demand, Kate Rushin will perform a public reading of her poetry.  The author of the bookThe Black Back-Ups, her “The Bridge Poem,” appears in This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color, a ground-breaking feminist anthology.  Kate will engage with the audience and answer questions following the reading.

James Sacré
March 27th, Tuesday, 4:30pm
Smith Poetry Center, Wright Hall, Smith College, Northampton
– Born to a farming family in the tiny village of Cougou in western France, James Sacré has published well over 60 books of poetry. His poems have appeared in every major French literary journal, and he has won just about every literary prize awarded to poets in France. He is a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and Doris Silbert Professor Emeritus in the Humanities at Smith College, where he taught French for many years. Prize-winning translator David Ball, also Professor Emeritus at Smith, will read his English versions of Sacré’s poems.Presented  by the Department of French Studies at Smith, with support from Comparative Literature, the Mount Holyoke French Department, and the Lewis Global Studies Center.

Christian McEwen “Listening to Poets/Poets Listening

Writer, playwright, and interviewer Christian McEwen talks about the SPARKS FROM THE ANVIL project she began 5 years ago. She has interviewed dozens of the top poets who have visited Smith. (Audio & transcripts of the interviews are available at Neilson Library, and she has published some of them in literary journals and aired them on the radio.)

Conversations with the Sea

Reading with Hannah Fries, Sara Parrilli and Marie-Elizabeth Mali
Centennial Hall, Miss Hall’s School, 492 Holmes Rd, Pittsfield
Marie-Elizabeth Mali’s underwater photography and poetry has been inspired by the plight of sharks, rays and other sea creatures worldwide. Hannah Fries and Sara Parrilli were inspired by the albatrosses of Midway Island, who feed at the plastic-filled Great Pacific Garbage Patch, to embark on a multimedia correspondence of poetry and visual art. Through poetry and striking visual images, the three artists will create a conversation inspired by the tragedies and beauties of the sea. The presentations will be followed by a discussion and Q&A on process and collaboration.

The Haydenville Congregational Church will present a staged reading of
OCTOBER MOURNING: A SONG FOR MATTHEW SHEPARD by Lesléa Newman on
Friday, April 4th at 7:00 p.m.
at the Haydenville Congregational Church,

The event is open to the public and wheelchair accessible.

Silkworm is Open for Submissions

Silkworm, the annual review of Florence Poets Society, is open for submissions. Join us in celebrating the 10th anniversary of Florence Poets Society, and the 7th edition of Silkworm.

Please submit up to 3 poems of no longer than 50 lines each and include a 30-word bio with your submission. Deadline for submissions: March 15, 2014. Only electronic submissions will be accepted, as an MS Word document attached in an email to info@florencepoets.com. Members and non-members of Florence Poets Society are encouraged to submit; please visitwww.florencepoets.com for more information.

Slate Roof Press offers 2^nd Annual Poetry Chapbook Contest.

The Forbes poetry discussion series 

Our winter/spring semester will have a variety of poets under discussion through May, led by several different discussion leaders. Several of the evenings are timed to precede a reading by that poet in the area (including Jean Valentine and W.S. Merwin). As always, we’ll meet at 7 pm in the Calvin Coolidge Museum on the second floor of the Forbes Library.

POETRY A LA CARTE RADIO SHOW
on WMUA-Amherst 91.1 FM
Wednesdays at 5:00pm (Note change of day and time!)

WMUA is ably run by students, and the Programmer, who has the unenviable job of arranging a continuous, live, on-air series of shows, 24 hours a day, is hard-pressed to get coverage when the UMass students are on vacation. (DJs are usually about half students and half community members). Hence the change in schedule. Streamed live at http://www.wmua.org/.

The program, hosted by Daisy Mathias, includes reading aloud from past and contemporary poets, and occasionally features live interview and poetry-reading with a local poet.

In Words, Out Words in Housatonic

In Housatonic, MA there is an open mic for poets and performers of all styles and ages.

1st Tuesday of each month at the Deb Koffman Gallery 137 Front Street, Housatonic, MA 01236. “In Words, Out Words.” is hosted by Francine Ciccarelli and there is usually a $1-6 suggested donation for heat and electricity. There are snacks there provided by whoever wants to bring them. The open mic begins at 7 and the featured performer goes on for about 20 minutes. It usually lasts until between 9 and 9:30.

The d’Alzon Arts Series: Poetry Reading

takes place at Assumption College (500 Salisbury Street, Worcester) in the Emmanuel d’Alzon Library on the third Friday of each month during the academic year. The format is an open mic for the first half-hour or so, a short break with refreshments and then 2 featured poets.. The reading starts at 7:00 p.m. and typically runs for 2 to 2 1/2 hours. The Dirty Gerund
