Poetry reading of new & old work with Howie Faerstein at White Square Books. Howie’s debut full-length book of poetry, “Dreaming of the Rain in Brooklyn” was published in 2013 by Press 53. His poetry has appeared in numerous journals including Great River Review, Nimrod, CutThroat,The Comstock Review, Off the Coast, Mudfish, The Pedestal, Connotation Press, and The November 3rd Club. He is a three-time nominee for the Pushcart Prize. He is a former member of the American Playwright’s Program and of the Naked Angels theatre group. He lives in Florence, Massachusetts and teaches American Literature at Westfield State University.

Dubbed the “rock star” of the world of translation by the Wall Street Journal, Stephen Mitchell describes the art as “falling in love with a book or a consciousness.” He was won lavish praise and a huge readership for the luminous clarity of his translations of Rilke, Neruda, and Amichai, and for breath-taking modern renditions of Homer’s Iliad, Gilgamesh, the Bhagavad Gita and The Book of Job.

The Gallery of Readers series, which began in 1990, takes its name from its first location, in Northampton’s Forbes Library art gallery. Most readers in the series are participants in Robin Barber and Carol Edelstein’s Vernon Street Writing Workshops. Carol and Robin have recently launched the Gallery of Readers Press, a new nonprofit venture intended to provide workshop participants with an opportunity to publish their work.
MB Caschetta is a recipient of the W.K. Rose Fellowship for Emerging Artists, the Sherwood Anderson Foundation Writing Award, and the Seattle Review Prize for fiction. She is thrilled that her novel Miracle Girls, from which she will read, has been selected as a finalist for the Lambda Literary Awards (Lammys) and was an Honorable Mention pick at the Los Angeles Literary Book Festival. Reading with Robin Barber is one of her lifelong goals, soon to be realized.
Robin Barber was born in Northampton in March of 1947, and he has been writing and leading writing workshops here ever since. He will be reading from his story “Magic Kingdom.”

Mystery & Character: Two Emerging Berkshire Writers Read
Reading and discussion hosted by Jessica Treat, with Frances Roth and Joyce Lautens O’Brien
The Good Purpose Gallery, 40 Main Street, Lee, 5:30 p.m.
A reading by two emerging Berkshire women writers of new work in short fiction and poetry, centering on mystery and character, followed by a discussion on the writing process. Frances Roth and Joyce Lautens O’Brien are mature women writers who have worked in various fields (website content management and theater work in one; editing in another) but who are now coming into their own as writers of poetry and fiction. Their voices are fresh, exciting and distinctive. Their stories and poems center on character, the friction sometimes found in relationships, and mystery.
Joyce Lautens O’Brien is a Canadian who now lives in northwestern Connecticut. Her work has appeared in Yemassee, where it won the Yemassee prize for best fiction in the issue, Connecticut River Review, Riverbabble, Pure Slush, Quantum Poetry, Halfway Down the Stairs, Foundling Review, Metazen, Mirror Dance and other magazines, and anthologized in Best New England Crime Stories, 2014.
Frances Roth’s writing has been greatly informed by her 20 years in theater as an actress and singer. She has toured the United States with two different national companies – The King and I with Yul Brynner and Man of LaMancha with Richard Kiley – and has sung with choruses of both the New York Opera and the Metropolitan Opera. “After all those years developing characters for stage roles it was a natural transition to creating characters for the page,” she says. “These are my performance pieces, and I love presenting them to an audience.” Frances also writes poetry and has had several poems published in the literary nature journal Avocet.

Janet Aalfs and Mary Clare Powell will read and perform some of their poetry. They will discuss the creative process and the joyous work of interweaving poetry and other art forms such as movement, music, visual art, etc. Q&A included.
Janet E. Aalfs is a poet, dancer, martial artist, educator, community peace activist, and published writer. For almost four decades she has been performing weavings of poetry and martial arts dance, and teaching empowerment skills, healing methods, and safety strategies. Janet was the poet laureate of Northampton, MA from 2003-2005. Since 1982 she has directed Valley Women’s Martial Arts: Institute for Healing and Violence-Prevention Strategies, and is a founding member of the National Women’s Martial Arts Federation. She has an MFA in Poetry. In addition to four chapbooks, her most recent collection of poems is Bird of a Thousand Eyes (Levellers). Other books include Reach (Perugia), Full Open (Orogeny), and Of Angels and Survivors (Two Herons).
Mary Clare Powell is a professor at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA, where she teaches in an M.Ed. program for teachers called Creative Arts in Learning. The program offers classroom teachers K-12 the opportunity to experience in some depth each of the arts–music, poetry, dance, drama, storytelling, and visual arts–so that they can integrate these arts into their curriculum. She is author of several books of poetry–Things Owls Ate, Academic Scat (poems from academia), In the Living Room–poems about aging, and Box of Water–poems about light and God and swimming. Powell lives in Greenfield where she writes and cares for a granddaughter Lilly. Her preoccupation these days is learning to accept whatever comes, and finding joy in ordinary things.
On Saturday, March 28, 2015, from 1 to 2:30pm an author signing for “Bad Atmosphere – A Collection of Poetry & Prose on the Climate Crisis” will be held at World Eye Bookshop, 156 Main St, Greenfield, MA. Local writer, poet and producer of The Enviro Show, Don Ogden (d.o.) marks the 36th anniversary of the Three Mile Island nuclear meltdown. As a long time anti-nuclear/pro-safe energy activist, d.o.’s work often critiques the false solutions to climate chaos: nuclear power, fracked gas and biomass being among them.

Janet MacFadyen has been published widely, including in The Atlantic, Poetry, The Malahat Review, The Southern Poetry Review, The Christian Science Monitor, Yankee, and elsewhere. The author of three works of poetry, she is a Puschcart nominee and has held a seven-month residential fellowship at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, as well as residencies at Cill Rialaig (Ireland) and the Fowler and C-Scape dune shacks in Provincetown. She has taught writing, literature, and creative writing at the college level, worked as a freelance writer/editor for many years, and participated in workshops and peer-run groups for decades.

Chivas Sandage’s first book, Hidden Drive (Antrim House, 2012) was a finalist for the 2012 ForeWord Book of the Year Awards in Poetry and nominated for a Pushcart Prize. MSNBC just released a mini-documentary in which she speaks of her current work on a nonfiction book about the 2012 double shooting of a young lesbian couple in south Texas. Sandage holds an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts and a BA from Bennington College.

We arrive at Wellspring House (http://www.wellspringhouse.net) on Friday afternoon for a workshop with prompts and a writing session followed by dinner, time to visit the lake, and an inspirational evening offering. On Saturday, we begin at 10:00 a.m. with a craft workshop called Lyric Vision and Voice on image-driven writing (whether prose or poetry) that emphasizes the rhythms and sounds of language and indulges compression and fragmentation. Prompts and a writing period follow until 1:00 p.m, then a two-hour break for lunch, a walk to the lake or café, time to chat or nap, read or draw. We start back up at 3:00 p.m. with a presentation and workshop on revision, followed by a discussion of strategies for writing and completing your book project, ending at 5:30. The evening is free for dinner and socializing, dancing and writing, with a short overnight assignment. Tom Daley serves on the faculty of the Online School of Poetry and teaches poetry writing at the Boston Center for Adult Education and poetry and memoir writing at Lexington Community Education. The open mic begins at 8:00 and the feature performs at approximately 10:00.
When indicated (most nights), an open poetry slam follows the feature.
